Executive Summary
The 13 filings in this BSE BANKEX stream cluster around two companies with substantive financial disclosures and two others with governance or ESG items.
Q2 FY27 (quarter ended 30 September 2026) results from Punjab National Bank and The Federal Bank show strong headline profit growth: Punjab National Bank net profit rose 12.8% YoY to Rs 5,532 Cr with GNPA down 90 bps to 2.55%, while The Federal Bank posted a record standalone net profit of Rs 1,386 Cr, up 45% YoY, with GNPA at a decadal low of 1.32%. Beneath the headlines, growth is uneven: Punjab National Bank's HY1 total income grew only 2.7%, operating profit growth slowed to 4.2% QoQ, savings deposits grew just 6.7% YoY, and the slippage ratio worsened to 0.77% from 0.71%. Federal Bank's CASA grew only 4% QoQ, gold loans grew 3% QoQ, and the cost-to-income ratio, though improved to 52.08% from 54.04%, remains elevated. Yes Bank carries the single most material development in the set: a Supreme Court ruling on October 15, 2026 upholding the write-down reversal on AT1 bonds worth Rs 8,415 Cr, with a pro-forma CET1 impact of roughly 250 bps. Governance and ESG items (Axis Bank and Federal Bank director appointments, Yes Bank's ESG rating moving to 79 from 77) are low-materiality and neutral-to-positive. Across the stream, asset quality is improving sharply while earnings momentum is concentrated in net interest income and fee income, with capital and leverage ratios drifting in several cases.

Risk Flags (8)
- Yes Bank/AT1 Litigation↓ [HIGH RISK]▼
Supreme Court upheld the Bombay HC ruling reinstating liability on Rs 8,415 Cr of AT1 bonds; pro-forma CET1 falls ~250 bps if principal is reinstated, and the bank is still evaluating legal options
- Punjab National Bank/Leverage↓ [HIGH RISK]▼
Debt-equity ratio rose to 0.88 from 0.64 YoY, and standalone net worth shows a decline on the governance table versus the March 31, 2026 reference, indicating higher leverage
- Punjab National Bank/Growth Quality↓ [MEDIUM RISK]▼
HY1 total income grew only 2.7% YoY against 12.8% Q2 net profit growth, and Savings Deposits grew just 6.7%, so earnings growth relies on provisioning releases rather than core income
- Punjab National Bank/Asset Quality↓ [MEDIUM RISK]▼
Slippage ratio worsened to 0.77% from 0.71%, and the domestic CASA share slipped to 36.6% from 37.3%, a funding-cost headwind
- The Federal Bank/Capital↓ [MEDIUM RISK]▼
CRAR slipped to 16.84% from 16.97% QoQ and 17.25% at FY26 year-end, while total debt to total assets rose to 5.77% from 4.62% QoQ, reducing the capital cushion as the book grows
- The Federal Bank/Cost Base↓ [MEDIUM RISK]▼
Employee costs rose to Rs 1,04,912 lakh from Rs 80,344 lakh YoY, and the cost-to-income ratio of 52.08% remains elevated despite improvement
- The Federal Bank/Sequential Momentum↓ [LOW RISK]▼
Gold loans grew only 3% QoQ, CASA only 4% QoQ, and the restructured book (Rs 1,390 Cr, 0.46% of advances) is a watch item
- Punjab National Bank/Margins↓ [LOW RISK]▼
Global NIM at 2.58% is modest, and Net NIM and operating margin were broadly flat at 19.72% versus 19.48%, limiting operating leverage
Opportunities (7)
- The Federal Bank/Earnings Re-rating↓ (OPPORTUNITY)◆
Record Q2 profit with 45% YoY growth and decadal-low NPAs (GNPA 1.32%, NNPA 0.17%) supports a re-rating thesis if growth sustains into Q3
- The Federal Bank/Franchise Scale↓ (OPPORTUNITY)◆
Business franchise crossed Rs 6.4 lakh Cr (+20% YoY) and net customer assets exceeded Rs 3 lakh Cr (+20% YoY), indicating compounding franchise growth
- The Federal Bank/Fee Engine↓ (OPPORTUNITY)◆
Fee income up 31.9% YoY and 22% QoQ, with cost-to-income improving to 52.08% from 54.04%, shows positive operating leverage
- Punjab National Bank/Asset Quality Recovery↓ (OPPORTUNITY)◆
GNPA down to 2.55% from 3.45% a year earlier (Rs 3,313 Cr from Rs 4,674 Cr) and credit cost at 0.08% annualised point to continued provisioning normalisation
- Punjab National Bank/Overseas Growth↓ (OPPORTUNITY)◆
Overseas advances up 62.7% YoY to Rs 84,110 Cr, a high-growth franchise lever versus the domestic book
- Yes Bank/AT1 Upside↓ (OPPORTUNITY)◆
If the bank reinstates AT1 principal on the Supreme Court outcome, legacy bondholder claims could resolve in the bank's favour on appeal or settlement, a binary event to track
- Yes Bank/ESG Momentum↓ (OPPORTUNITY)◆
ESG rating improvement to 79 from 77 gives an independent third-party data point supporting institutional ESG screening eligibility
Sector Themes (6)
- Asset Quality Cycle Turning Across Public and Private Banks◆
Gross NPA ratios fell sharply YoY at both Punjab National Bank (3.45% to 2.55%) and The Federal Bank (1.83% to 1.32%), with slippage ratios mixed (PNB up to 0.77%, Federal down to 0.59%), pointing to a broad but uneven credit-cost tailwind [IMPLICATION: earnings quality improves as provisions normalise; monitor slippage divergence]
- Profit Growth Outpacing Revenue Growth◆
Profit growth (PNB +12.8%, Federal +45.1%) far exceeds HY1 total income growth at PNB (+2.7%), indicating earnings are driven by provisioning releases and cost control rather than balance-sheet expansion [IMPLICATION: quality-of-earnings scrutiny warranted in the next quarter]
- CASA and Deposit Mix Pressure◆
Domestic CASA share fell to 36.6% at PNB and Savings Deposits grew only 6.7%, while Federal Bank's CASA grew just 4% QoQ despite a 21% YoY rise, signalling deposit competition and rising funding costs [IMPLICATION: NIM sustainability is a sector-wide concern]
- Capital Ratios Under Modest Pressure Amid Growth◆
Federal Bank's CRAR fell to 16.84% and PNB's debt-equity rose to 0.88, as balance-sheet growth outpaced capital generation [IMPLICATION: capital-raising or ESOP-dilution risk could emerge in coming quarters]
- Governance and Board Refresh◆
Axis Bank and The Federal Bank both appointed experienced independent directors (including a former SEBI Whole-Time Member and a senior technology executive), reflecting a sector focus on regulatory and digital expertise [IMPLICATION: governance quality is improving at the board level]
- Legacy Liabilities Resurfacing in Private Banking◆
The Yes Bank AT1 ruling highlights residual legal and capital overhangs from the 2020 resolution, a reminder that legacy exposures can still move bank capital ratios [IMPLICATION: legal-outcome risk should be priced into private-sector bank valuations]
